Wild Designs

Peabody Essex Museum

Salem, US  2018

The Living Architecture Systems Group was featured in the Wild Designs Exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum, on view from May 26, 2018 to August 4, 2019. Wild Designs featured works by artists and designers looking to nature and living systems for creative solutions to human problems, ranging from biology-inspired media sculptures, artist installations, drawings, to fully realized design projects. The LASGs display in the exhibition showcased four living prototypes which appeared in various experimental testbeds previously: the Breathing Pore, the Sargasso Veil, the IR Sensor and Array, and a section of a Column with a mounted Sensor Cluster. These prototypes encouraged viewers to envision a not-so-distant time when architecture could include bio-inspired elements responding directly to humans and the environment.

The exhibition took place in PEMs Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center and explored biomimetic and bio-informed innovations in design and technology that either model or engage nature to generate novel products and more sustainable solutions. Included were design projects ranging from preliminary concepts to realized products and buildings, as well as mixed media sculptures, artist installations and drawings.
